Your NYC Neighbor – is a way of introducing New Yorkers to a rich community of savvy parents. New York is a diverse City bustling with all kinds of families and personalities. We also love to grab tips and recommendations from moms and dads in certain neighborhoods and throughout the 5 Boroughs, and especially people who have created a product, service or site that helps new parents or appeals to children. Meet Vanessa Alamo, founder of Dearest You.
Tell is a bit about yourself?
I grew up in Washington Heights, NYC and Miami, Florida. I missed the city, so I came back about 15 yrs ago to study and I earned my graduate degree. After graduating I worked with children and families in both outpatient and hospital settings as a social worker and then later as an administrator.
What do you do?
Since the birth of my two children I had this shift in perspective and purpose and found myself wanting to work with and support mothers during pregnancy and post-partum. I founded Dearest you | Baby planning for city living to help expecting mothers and their families prepare and plan for baby. We provide the following services: birth and timeline planning, nursery organization, baby gear consulting and custom registry planning. We make referrals to birth and post-partum Doulas and Lactation Consultants for breastfeeding and nursing support. We want mothers to feel fully supported while planning for baby and we are committed to doing this with each mom and family that we work with.
Where do you live?
Sunset Park, Brooklyn
Why do you love that neighborhood?
There is such a strong sense of community. Its vibrant and multicultural. We are close to Sunset Park and find that when we go to the park, we are sure to see friends or people in the community that we’ve crossed paths with either in the streets or at a local bodega. I know almost everyone on my block and I love that and my kids do too.
Why do you love what you do?
I love the idea of partnership through planning. Supporting women during pregnancy and post-partum is what I love to do.
What’s new for you?
I have launched a parent education class – Baby Gear 101 to offer to clients in-home. I would also like to partner with other local nyc businesses to offer my class to groups of newly expecting moms and families. It is a comprehensive class covering all that is Baby Gear including what features to look for when deciding if a product suits a families lifestyle and needs.
My family looks forward to exploring all that the city has to offer in the summertime. You can find us at the park eating ices and enjoying the summer sun.
