Your NYC Neighbor: Melissa of Nibble + Squeak

Melissa of Nibble Sneak

Your NYC Neighbor – is a way of introducing New Yorkers to a rich community of savvy parents and business owners. New York is a diverse City bustling with all kinds of families and personalities. We also love to grab tips and recommendations from moms and dads in certain neighborhoods and throughout the 5 Boroughs, and especially people who have created a product, service or site that helps new parents. Meet Melissa of

Melissa and her little pipsqueak!

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a former expat mama who has now returned to her home turf with pipsqueak-in-tow and an outsized appetite!  A native New Yorker, I went to Cornell and fell in love with the Finger Lakes (and also my now husband.) We moved to London for a one-year jaunt, which somehow turned into two… and then ten!  Both cities are “home” and we’re dual citizens now – and so is our daughter who was born there.

I worked in publishing in London, managing sales in Europe and Asia for a group of fantastic independent publishers. I loved the food aspect of my travels, even if it was just a pretzel grabbed between meetings in Hamburg, or a bowl of congee for hotel breakfast in Hong Kong.  But the best part of my job was working on in-person events: author tours, book launches, festival appearances, writing seminars and more. Now, back in NYC, I work in event management — bringing media partnerships, corporate sponsors and local exhibitors to a number of Brooklyn-based special events and festivals.

What neighborhood do you live in?

Williamsburg, just on the border with Greenpoint. Why do I love it?
First and foremost, for the food. There’s a Greenmarket on our doorstep, so many food producers, from fish smokers to coffee roasters to microbrewers, and those donut shops and ice cream parlors… And clearly, there’s so much buzz about the restaurant scene.

We have Michelin-starred dining like Luksus, Semilla, and Delaware and Hudson where we’re hosting our first lunch. And we have history – restaurants and food businesses that have been doing things right for decades and stuck around. Plus vibrant communities that preserve their food traditions: my baby is already quite a connoisseur of pizza and pierogies!

Tell us about your parent business Nibble and Squeak.
Our mission at Nibble+squeak is to make it easy for new parents to treat themselves and enjoy their local food scene at all levels. We work with some of the top restaurants in NYC to create a comfortable haven for families: private rooms and restaurant buy-outs, custom menus, daytime openings, plus high chairs, changing mats, stroller parking and the opportunity to meet new friends.

It’s a win-win for restaurants and restaurant-goers alike: the restaurant shows off its kid-friendly side, and our diners get a no stress treat for themselves, plus a relaxed introduction to the table and perhaps new cuisines for babies. Nibble+squeak helps to normalize restaurant-dining with our pipsqueaks-in-tow.

Why do you think new parents will benefit from Nibble and Squeak?
Parents (and other carers) will get to experience a really unique and vibrant part of the dining scene in their city. A lot of restaurants have limited resources for infants and young children, or aren’t open for lunch, or serve a different menu in the evening. It can be intimidating, even at the best-intentioned restaurants, to feed and care for a small baby in public. We work with them to bring that same luxurious experience to the daytime crowd that needs it.

When my daughter was born, I strapped her in her carrier and mastered on-the-go dining à deux: I grabbed pizza and tacos and munched over her sleeping head (sorry, Baby!), dined on barstools, banquettes, and park benches…but I realized that lunch didn’t always have to be easy or fast. We had time. Even if it was heavily peppered with feeding and changing and rocking and napping. And boy, did I deserve a treat!

What’s ahead for Nibble and Squeak?
Our first big lunch will be on Thursday January 28th at 1pm at Delaware and Hudson.  It’s their acclaimed tasting menu, which is usually only available in the evening, tweaked for a 3-course lunchtime service.  We’ve rented the whole venue, so everyone can get really comfortable.  It’s $38 for the adults and the little ones are free.

And then lots more lunches!  We are already working with a number of exciting and new restaurants on special lunch events.  No names until the calendar is confirmed, but expect both modern and traditional, high end and casual…

We will have some evening events too – a Sip+squeak Happy Hour in February. We’re also planning a few big dinner feasts scattered throughout the year.

Check us out and come and join us for our next Squeak-Up!
