Your NYC Neighbor – is a way of introducing New Yorkers to a rich community of savvy parents and business owners. New York is a diverse City bustling with all kinds of families and personalities. We also love to grab tips and recommendations from moms and dads in certain neighborhoods and throughout the 5 Boroughs, and especially people who have created a product, service or site that helps new parents. Meet Gene Schafer of ARC Athletics.
Gene tell us a bit about yourself
I’m a little different than some of the personal trainers you may have met in the past. I’m an Athletic Trainer, which has a bit of a difference in the educational path that some fitness professionals have taken. Athletic trainers are the ones who run on the field or court when an athlete gets hurts. Then we take the athlete through sports rehab and conditioning to get them ready to go back to their sport. Athletic trainers have a history of working with professional, college and high school athletes. I have taken it a step further to work with an athletic population…new moms fit that category!
I earned two undergraduate degrees from Purdue University in athletic training and health education and my masters is from Columbia University’s Teachers College. After working with athletes of all ages, in 2005 opened my own sports rehab and fitness training facility. I have a son who is 8 and a daughter who is 6. My wife is super organized entrepreneur in the media business and does an amazing job managing our family.
What neighborhood do you live in? Why do you love it?
We live in Tribeca and my business is based in Tribeca. This neighborhood has a great feeling of community and it is wonderful to have so much for kids and families to do. The restaurants cater to families, there is a variety of parks, being close to Hudson River Park is so beneficial for kids and adults
Tell us what you do
Our fitness training programs are specific to what you are looking to accomplish. Since I’ve been doing this for a while, I can see other things that the client may not know she needs. Our goal is to keep you fit, strong and flexing during the pregnancy. I can also read what the client may need that day…sometimes she may need more neck and shoulder stretching after a long day at her computer.
Why should pregnant women consider hiring a trainer?
Hiring us will give you someone to talk to about the changes going on in your body and the best way to keep you fit while you are pregnant.
What types of exercise are especially beneficial?
Some of the most beneficial exercises you should consider are those that help your posture, core, low back and legs. Your body will start to change and as the pregnancy progresses you may experience back pain and have trouble with your posture. So, we can help you with your body awareness and remind you of good exercises and stretches that you can do before and after the pregnancy.
Any special discounts or promotions for new sign-ups?
I’d be happy to give anyone who is pregnant a 1/2 price first workout.. Just mention that you read about me on Baby Does NYC!
