Your NYC Neighbor: Cora Gambino of The Growing Caterpillar

Your NYC Neighbor – is a way of introducing New Yorkers to a rich community of savvy parents. New York is a diverse City bustling with all kinds of families and personalities. We also love to grab tips and recommendations from moms and dads in certain neighborhoods and throughout the 5 Boroughs, and especially people who have created a product, service or site that helps new parents or appeals to children. Meet Cora Gambino founder of The Growing Caterpillar, doula and mom.

Tell us a bit about yourself?
I am from Manhattan originally and was born in Metropolitan Hospital in East New York. I am from a traditional roman catholic family with strong cultural South American ties inherited by my parents spending many years helping my communities in various ways by working in soup kitchens, being a Sunday school teacher, traveling to countries such as Panama, France, Italy, and Spain just to name a few. I obtained my bachelor’s degree from Saint John’s University and taught English as a second language for almost 6 years to many undocumented immigrants so that they would be able to communicate better with their community and their very own children. I am married with two wonderful children. Months after birthing my daughter I became a doula and eventually in 2014 I started my own business The Growing Caterpillar.

Where do you live?
I currently reside in Staten Island, New York.

Why do you love where you live?

I love where I live because of the community and its unique history. It is close to the city but it provides that homelike feel one would seek when raising children. It is a great place to live which provides long lasting relationships with its people that lasts for years- everyone knows everyone and they take care of you, it feels like family, I dig that.

What do you do?
I am a jack of all trades. Besides being a mother of two and wife, I am a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, placenta encapsulator and professional childcare professional. I founded my business The Growing Caterpillar which embodies all of my skills into one. I provide services of all kinds, if I have a minute I’ll take care of you! I provide services such as yoga classes, mommy and me sessions, talk therapy for anyone that needs to talk, and a helping hand for any one at any stage of life.

Why do you love what you do?
I love what I do because I simply love to help people at all their stages of life. I love to be called at the beginning of life but then there is also the ups and downs and the in between moments. I am able to see life start and watch it grow, like a watering can pouring my wisdom that was passed down to me from my parents and a little ray of sunshine that can simply nourish you from afar. You realize that everyone is a Growing Caterpillar in their own way. If you need a hand to hold, a listening ear, an understanding heart, I help you from any point of your life and can help anyone navigate their own destination of mental and physical well being.

What is so special about your profession
My profession is special because it involves everyone. We are all born, continuously growing and evolving. Every ending starts with a beginning and has an in between. I have been called to be apart of many families lives also including the end of life. Life is natural and should be simple, everyone should know that. You don’t need a book, you don’t need special classes or gadgets to get through it, you just need a butterfly to land on you. Like a butterfly I pass on by and show you the beauty of my wings as I too am growing in my own physical and mental experience which we call life.
