Want to Avoid 12 Hormone-Altering Chemicals in Your Breast-Milk?

Did you know that 232 toxic chemicals were found in umbilical blood samples? And 12 hormone-disrupting chemicals were found in breast-milk? Let’s begin with breast-milk. Below are the ‘Dirty Dozen’ according to EWG.org a nonprofit watchdog for consumers. Why avoid them?

“There is no end to the tricks that endocrine disruptors can play on our bodies: increasing production of certain hormones; decreasing production of others; imitating hormones; turning one hormone into another; interfering with hormone signaling; telling cells to die prematurely; competing with essential nutrients; binding to essential hormones; accumulating in organs that produce hormones.” EWG

1 – BPA = estrogen mimicker, found in plastics
Linked to cancer, heart disease, obesity, reproductive issues, early puberty. 93% of Americans have BPA in their bodies.

How to Avoid?
Go fresh instead of canned – many food cans have BPA in their linings – or research which companies don’t use BPA or similar chemicals in their products. Say no to receipts, since thermal paper is often coated with BPA. Avoid plastics marked with “PC,” for polycarbonate, or recycling label #7. Not all of these plastics contain BPA, but many do – and it’s better safe than sorry when it comes to keeping synthetic hormones out of your body. Source:ewg.org/bpa

2 – DIOXIN = hormone disruptor, found in animals products: milk, fish, eggs, meat
Linked to lower sperm count, disrupts male and female hormones

How to Avoid?
Eat fewer animal sourced products. Source organic animal products. Avoid processed meat products.

3 – ATRAZINE = herbicide, agricultural use, corn, seeps into water sources
Linked to breast tumors, delays puberty, prostrate inflammation in animals.

How to Avoid
Buy organic produce and get a drinking water filter certified to filter Atrazine: ewg.org/report/ewgs-water-filter-buying-guide.

4 – PHTHALATES = plastic food containers, PVC plastic wrap, some kids’ toys, “fragrance” in personal care products
Linked to premature death of testicular cells which equals lower sperm count! Birth defects in the male reproductive system.

How to Avoid
Get rid of all of your plastic: sippy cups, bottles, rattles, teethers. Source naturally-made containers or bags and bottles (glass). Look for non-treated (chemicals) wooden toys. Use organic, natural personal care products.

5 – PERCHLORATE = a component of rocket fuel used on crops
Linked to thyroid hormone imbalance which is critical for proper brain function and development in infants and small children.

guide. It’s virtually pretty impossible to avoid perchlorate, but you can reduce its potential effects by making using iodized salt in your diet.

6 – FIRE RETARDANTS = chemicals used to prevent fire, found on furniture, fabrics, toys
Linked to lower IQ, hormone disruption.

How to Avoid

7 – LEAD = old paint, aging water pipes
Linked to lower IQ, hearing loss, birth defects, premature birth, miscarriage, kidney damage, increased blood pressure, nervous system damage.

How to Avoid
If you live in an old building remove crumbling paint carefully. Antique or vintage cribs that are painted may also be contaminated. Use a water filter to remove lead from tap water.

8 – ARSENIC = water supplies
Linked to bladder, lung and skin cancer.

How to Avoid
Buy a good water filter.

9 – MERCURY = contaminated fish, seafood
Linked to fetal brain development impairment, female hormone disruptor (menstrual cycle).

How to Avoid
Source seafood and sushi outlets that use sustainable fish, like wild salmon and farmed trout.

10 – PERFLUORINATED CHEMICALS = non-stick pans
Linked to low birth weight, low sperm count, thyroid issues, high cholesterol.

How to Avoid
Do not use non-stick pans. Source glass and ceramic coated pans.

11 – ORGANOPHOSPHATE PESTICIDES = commonly used pesticide
Linked to low sperm count, thyroid disruption.

How to Avoid

12 – GLYCOL ETHERS = used in cleaning products
Linked to shrunken testicles, low sperm count, damage to an unborn child, childhood asthma and allergies.

How to Avoid
