We also love to grab tips and recommendations from moms and dads in certain neighborhoods and throughout the 5 Boroughs, and especially people who have created a product, service or site that helps new parents or appeals to children. Meet Kristin McGee one of New York City’s leading yoga and Pilates influencers, and a pioneer of the yoga movement.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I am originally from Pocatello, Idaho where I grew up with two brothers, one older and one younger. We were all very active as a family and still all meet up in Idaho four or five times a year to ski, hike, boat, bike, camp and play! I moved to New York in 1994 to attend NYU Tisch School of the Arts and that is how I discovered yoga.

Every day we would warm up with yoga and breath work to get connected to our body and voice. I fell in love with yoga and certified to teach upon graduating with my BFA to support my acting career. I taught everywhere and as much as I could. I also certified in Pilates and got my personal training certificate. When I was discovered by MTV to lead and choreograph the first ever MTV yoga video, it opened the door to combining my two passions, performing and teaching yoga.

From there, I went on to do over 100 videos and started writing for Health magazine and other outlets on fitness, wellness and yoga. I also became the host of the Pilates Power Gym on the Home Shopping Network and make frequent appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Fox Good Day NY and CBS Morning News to name a few. I got married in 2009 and had my first son Timothy in 2013. I’m currently pregnant with twin boys and due end of November.

 

Where do you live?

I live on the Upper West Side in Manhattan.

 

Why do you love where you live?

I LOVE being near Central Park and being able to take Timothy there all of the time. I also love Riverside Park and all of the great playgrounds on the UWS. The moms are awesome up here and it’s very family friendly. I really love the UWS community.

What do you do?

I teach yoga and Pilates, I’m the contributing yoga and wellness editor for Health magazine, I run my website, blog and social media channels and I’m a spokeswoman and host.

 

Why do you love what you do?

I love sharing fitness and wellness with as many people as I can. My job keeps me active which is awesome. I can set my own hours and I work for myself. I have amazing opportunities, work with incredible people and travel to really cool places. I often get to take my son with me too which is a huge bonus. He loves doing yoga with me!

 

What’s special about your service?

It’s very intimate and immediate. I form great connections with people and get to know them on a deeper level. I love teaching group classes and working with people one on one. I love doing on camera work and still using my skills from my acting days. I also love doing photo shoots and creating new content.

 

What’s next for you?

I have my first book, “Chair Yoga, Sit, Stretch and Strengthen Your Way to a Healthier, Happier You” coming out with Harper Collins in January. I’m very excited!
