Your NYC Neighbor is a way of introducing New Yorkers to a rich community of savvy parents. New York is a diverse City bustling with all kinds of families and personalities. We also love to grab tips and recommendations from moms and dads in certain neighborhoods and throughout the 5 Boroughs, and especially people who have created a product, service or site that helps new parents or appeals to children. Meet Gabriella Pulluno owner at Sugar Kiss Bakeshop.
Tell us a bit about yourself?
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY – the first in my family born here. I grew up in a traditional Italian household, with grandparents living just downstairs. I spent many hours with my mother and grandmother learning how to cook and bake, and it really became a passion for me. I began taking classes here and there, learning to ice a cake, whip up a simple buttercream rose, etc. The more I did, the more I wanted to know. To this day, I continue to experiment and refine my skills.
I always knew that pastry was in my future. I earned a degree in Marketing from St. John’s University, where I dabbled in creating goodies for my sorority, as well as university functions. After graduation, I worked in publishing, where I truly learned so much about promotions and advertising. After a few years of working full time, then spending nights and weekends whipping up specialty cakes and sweets for special events,I took the leap. I left the corporate world & set out to grow and develop my business. Now, over a year later, SugarKiss Bakeshop is thriving!
Where do you live?
I have lived in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn my whole life.
Why do you love where you live?
There is no place in the world like New York City, and certainly no place like Brooklyn! Its a neighborhood rich in history, and charm. Its a place where you can still go to a butcher, a fish monger, a small bakery for a crusty baguette, an amazing store filled with favorite old world Italian delicacies, amidst a truly diverse group of residents that have grown and evolved with the times, while still maintaining the traditions of days past. Just a hop away from Manhattan, there is the ease of experiencing all that NYC has to offer, and the joy of coming home and unwinding in a cozy place of your own!
What do you do?
As the founder of SugarKiss Bakeshop, I really get to live my dream! Everyday I have the ability to work one-on-one with people celebrating occasions at all stages of life. I love to connect with my clients, find out what they like, and really work to create something that will bring their vision to life (and taste great too!)
Why do you love what you do?
I genuinely love what I do! I love being creative, experimenting with flavors etc. But the very best part is knowing someone is enjoying what I create! I get such joy, and feel so much pride, with every cake, cookie, sweet I have the privilege of creating for someone’s special day – from weddings, to birthdays, to new babies & everything in between.
