Ever wondered why there aren’t too many coats for pregnant women that also work for new moms? Have you struggled to find a winter coat that zips comfortably over your expectant belly? Do you worry about over-wrapping or under-wrapping your newborn in a blanket over a carrier? With NYC in the grip of a cold winter blast, a new mom battling the fierce cold is a familiar sight. But it took a trip home to the Ukraine for one woman to see the potential of a baby wearing or pregnant winter coat.
Kat Dunam saw a woman wearing a baby carrier coat in the harshest of eastern European weather and she realized the potential for an American market. The result was her company Taskubabi.
Dunam then approached manufacturers in eastern Europe and set about creating a stylish range of carrier/pregnancy coats using high-end materials and fair trade practices. And unlike many insulated coats currently on the market Dunam’s apparel is cruelty-free and are vegan (are not derived from animal derived materials). They are also free from chemicals and toxic dies, things that can cause allergies in new babies. For many eco and health conscious parents that’s a huge plus. It is important to remember that these coats are designed to go over a baby carrier.
